Girls from 1st Long Eaton Guides and Khelone Rangers took part in a Guide and Scout Regatta at Attenborough Sailing Club this weekend. The girls had only a little sailing experience, but were very keen.

There were 12 boats on the water. The weather was awful but that didn't spoil the fun! Some of our leaders and parents turned out to help too, with more coming to watch the racing.
One of our boats had a bad start in the first race and couldn't manage to catch the fleet, but our other boat had an experienced helm and came home first. In the second race, both boats started well and kept together for the first lap, crossing the line in 1st and 3rd place. However, the wind dropped and the lighter boat was able to forge ahead with the other boat finishing with the rest of the fleet.
This was the first event of its kind locally and was organised by an Explorer Scout. She had found sponsorship from national and local businesses and was able to provide breakfast, lunch, prizes and goodie bags for all competitors and helpers. One of her aims was to encourage more girls to participate in sailing - our Guides and Rangers are certainly keen to carry on!
